A CORONER has delivered an open verdict on the death of a Vietnamese man with drug gang connections whose body was found dumped near Llanelli.

Kim Van Tran’s body was discovered in a drainage ditch between Five Roads and Horeb on May 8. An inquest yesterday heard that the cause of death could not be explained, although it was thought he may have been electrocuted.

The 34-year-old fisherman, who has a wife and a young daughter in Vietnam, had been living in a cannabis factory where there was a hazardous electrical supply to maintain the plants.

Detective Constable Wayne Bevan told the inquest council workers found the body. Tran was wrapped in hessian material in a black plastic bag and bound by tape. He was wearing a polo shirt, jeans and a turquoise beaded necklace, but had no footwear or socks. A note written in Vietnamese left in his pocket read his name, address and a Vietnamese number. A major police investigation was carried out which led to the discovery of 498 cannabis plants at Porth-y- Deri, Porthyrhyd, and 373 at a house in Thomas Street, Llandeilo. Convictions Tran had been involved in growing cannabis at the house in Porth-y-Deri. Further police inquiries led to four convictions for offences including cannabis production and perverting the course of justice
